Americana in Seldovia

Posted on | August 12, 2004 | 39 Comments

Seldovia is a small hamlet at the tip of Kenia peninsula in Alaska. No roads lead to Seldovia, it can be accessed only by small planes or boats. About 306 friendly people(so says the tourist pamphlet) live in Seldovia. They hide themselves pretty well, we hardly saw a dozen. An ideal idyllic place if you are an artist or an author and can live off your royalties. A long travelogue will follow later *people make themselves vanish* For the time being, I’ll post a few versions of Stars and Stripes I came across in Seldovia.

Till now I have not photoshopped any of the pictures posted in this blog, thinking it went against the photographer’s ethics, but tomlinsonian‘s pic(8th one in his post) has made me realize that even good photographers sometimes use photoshop, so why not a wannabe like me. In the photo below I have blurred the background using Photoshop Elements.

    Awesome!!!!!

you know, one of the pictures that i did’nt post from my last set was a picture of a street, with flags flying all down the length …it had the three things that drive america – patriotism(jingoism??), cars and gas…the only other thing that drives america is the will of its people – soemthing i couldn’t capture…
    very nice idea dd…..

Nice pictures DD. Very sharp and bright. The hydrant definitely looks better. You seem to have captured the spirit well. Nothing wrong with photoshopping. The darkroom folks did ‘dodging’ and ‘burning.’

You could consider straightening the store sign. Follow the vertical edge. Just my sense.

    🙂

    Re: BTW

I was in 2500 too, and was struck by the lack of the wannabes…after the BA show, this was a welcome relief..
a few images remain in my mind..the elderly couple (early 40s) swaying gently to what must have been the anthem of their rebellous days(Money and Time)..the guy next to me , smoking pot and drinking what might have been cherry Brandy, totally engrossed in his own world……..

Seldovia sounds like it’s right out of some cheapo thriller! Don’t tell me it’s real 🙂

Dang!!! Everybody seems to have attended the Waters concert except me :-(, wish I was there, but I was in the Bangalore(silicon valley) of the west. Amused to Death is my favorite solo album of Waters, such perfection in rock is rarely attained! Amazed to Death!!!

Ok thanks for making me feel good (with that mention of dodging & burning). Yep , I’ll try straightening the store sign and will post it over this one if it turns out right – thats a good suggestion.

Seldovia is very much real ha ha ha…it’s the first russian outpost on the mainland of alaska(discounting Sitka which is in the panhandle region) and means ‘herring’ in russian, though none of my russian traveling companions knew what herring was called in russian!
